Hello Ladies,
If any of you would like to teach a workshop this summer in West Texas (of all places!) please contact me asap. Whatever your fancy is - off the top of my head, I'm thinking ceramics, photography, painting, stained glass, etc. etc. By hook or crook, this will be a paying gig. We will also be in need of instructors in the Fall. Workshops can run a few days to a week, or two, dependent upon your needs. Please send your resume, a url to your website (if you have one), and a paragraph or two describing the workshop you are interested in teaching to: lisa@drakaarts.org

We will be based in Marfa, a lovely little town with a lot of Donald Judd in it, and the lovely national park of Big Bend just 80 miles south and oh so close to the border of ol'Mexico. And, yes, there are hot springs down the road a piece, plus the "mysterious" Marfa LIGHTS! Check out: http://www.marfatx.com It's a place where we can be artsy cowgirls in the old wild west of Texas.

Artist-in-Residence Program details to be announced real soon.

*Currently doesn't run - doesn't turn over. Quite likely just needs a new starter (and probably new battery - it has been sitting for awhile) - Otherwise has been quite reliable with only one owner.

It's a drag... In case you haven't received the news via email - the gory details are as follows and at www.burninbush.org:

[Burnin'Bush] Update: This year's Permit; BLM & Black Rock Politics

This summer's BB festivities MAY BE CANCELED due to BLM Red Tape & Black Rock Politics —

The Bureau of Land MANagement is requiring Burnin'Bush to pay $6700 up front in "Recovery Costs" in lue of $4/per person per day for a Special Recreation Permit. BB is also now required to purchase liability insurance for all attendees while on public land for 2-3 days. Icing on the cake - we have been informed that Law Enforcement will also be ever-present, and include federal, state, and county levels.

Not only is this absurd, we absolutely CAN NOT afford such ridiculous costs for a weekend of our family and friends camping, making art, and metal banging in the desert! Last year Burnin'Bush brought in approximately $2,000 in donations and still BB didn’t pay for itself.

Thus far, we have been very cooperative with the BLM - We provided them with the Operating Plan they requested, and have met several times to discuss the possibility of having the permit fees waived due to the fact that we are a Not For Profit educational group/happening - All to no avail.

The restrictions being imposed by the BLM contradict all that BB stands for on this lovely patriotic holiday. What has happened to celebrating freely in the land of the free? Bureaucratic Bullshit... The BLM has also admitted the obvious, this is the trickle down effect of BM POLITICS on the Black Rock Desert. No matter what size a gathering, entertainment on any level in this area has to pass the approval of the public, and [specifically] the Burning Man organizers — see the Red Tape Letters link on the BB website.

Next step? We either comply (and charge everyone in advance) or find a new place! We're not interested in going into the festival business, we just want to inspire with fire, eat hot dogs, make art, and keep Burnin'Bush FREE! Any leads to a possible private locale would be appreciated - please contact topazrose@burninbush.org
Thank you.

Otherwise, come and visit Andrew and I at the Artery camp right in the Center Camp circle. I'll be working from 9am to 2pm Mon-Wed and we're camped just behind the artist check in just a couple doors down from Arctica, so no excuse not to come find us! We'll also be dining with Blyss Abyss nightly, so that is a good place to find us as well.

I was super bummed out for the people in GERLACH. We stopped in town on the way out on July 4th and kids and families were lined up along the road waiting to see Art Cars (someone put out flyers/and it happened last year). We were eatin' in the cafe and everyone was discussing - whether they were coming? By 2:45 people started packing up to leave. No Art Cars. I was super bummed for the kids - sitting out their with their
flags etc.

I also have not had much response back from people who are planning to bring out their Mutant Vehicles for the SHOW N' TELL on July 25th. www.bayareamotorclub.com/Events.html
I had a lot more response for the April event.

Is it because everyone is WAY TO BUSY working on their cars?, or waiting to see if Burning Man approves their plans etc. for cars before even starting? Does anyone have any feedback to what's so diffrent in the world of Art Cars this year? I am curious....

It took forever to narrow down where various people were camping, than trying to find them in the middle of the night HUH! What a joke.

People were camped in Blue Wing, Trego, and on the BM Playa. There was/is varying RUMORS of why/how people became so split-up. It was a bit of a bummer considerinng there was a lot of people I wanted to hang-out with and spending a half n- hour on dirt roads to do so was exhausting BUT we did it. Some people actually relocated to try to merge the various groups - but it was hard to decide which way to go...

Anyone have any thoughts about why this year was so incongruous? Seems like a lot of people had some varying impressions of what to expect. One i.e. was some people had thought DRAKA was going to be there and were surprised to find out it was still out of state...
